Reduction at the source, Re-use, Recycling and Reclamation. These stages constitute the first principle of the Québec Residual Materials Policy seeks to create a waste-free society that looks to maximize added value through intelligent management of its residual materials. The principle is easily applicable to all residual materials, as we need to define if it is possible to avoid producing this residual material or to give the product a second life before recycling, composting or eventually proceed with the waste disposal.
A concrete example? Paper. Reading on screen rather that printing systematically is a responsible move towards of reduction in the source; using unprinted paper as draft is another excellent option (re-use); putting both sides printed papers in the recycling bin is a winning solution and to fully reach the goal: paper handkerchiefs and kitchen paper towels are recycled in the compost bin. This way, our actions will be coherent with the 4R!
